Building Enclosure Leakage Testing (Air Barrier Testing)
Air barrier testing during construction provides critical benefits that enhance a building’s energy efficiency, comfort, and durability. By identifying and addressing air leaks early in the process, this testing ensures that the building envelope effectively prevents uncontrolled air movement between the interior and exterior. This leads to improved energy performance, as heating and cooling systems operate more efficiently when air leakage is minimized, ultimately reducing utility costs for building owners and occupants. Additionally, air barrier testing helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures, eliminating drafts and improving occupant comfort, while also reducing the risk of moisture infiltration that can lead to mold growth and structural damage.

Beyond immediate performance improvements, air barrier testing contributes to long-term building resilience and sustainability. Verifying the integrity of the air barrier system during construction ensures compliance with energy codes (i.e. IECC 2021/2024) and standards (i.e. USACE Air Leakage Test Protocol for Building Envelopes), which is increasingly important in modern building regulations. It also mitigates potential issues that could arise post-occupancy, such as costly repairs or indoor air quality problems, by addressing them before the building is fully enclosed. Ultimately, investing in air barrier testing during construction safeguards the building’s longevity, enhances its environmental footprint, and delivers a higher-quality, more comfortable space for its users.
Pacific SBS is certified by the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) to perform building enclosure leakage testing.
